+ Flower Remedy Study: Ghostpipe
for pain that reaches beyond the threshold
Ghost Pipe meets the woman who has left her body to survive.
Not metaphorically. Literally. The eldest daughter who learned so early that her feelings were too much, her needs inconvenient, her pain a burden — that she simply... went somewhere else. Stayed busy. Stayed competent. Stayed useful.
She doesn't always know she's dissociated. She calls it being strong. She calls it coping. She calls it “just fine, how are you?”
The shadow here is this: she has mistaken absence for resilience.
And somewhere underneath all that competence is a tremendous amount of unfelt pain waiting — not to destroy her — but to finally be witnessed and deeply held by botanical intelligence that knows the same blueprint. Ghost Pipe knows this. She lives it. She draws her nourishment not from the light but from deep underground relationship — from the hidden network — from what most people never see.
Jung spoke of the descent as necessary. Not pathological. The psyche that cannot go down cannot fully come up. Ghost Pipe is a descent plant. She doesn't help you rise. She helps you go under safely. She is a companion for the parts of the journey that happen in the dark — the grief, the dissociation, the pain that couldn't be felt when it happened.
She is also a plant of liminality — she exists between kingdoms, between worlds, between the underground and the surface. She is for the woman who is between who she was and who she's becoming. Between the performed self and the true one. This is Inanna at the gate. This is the descent. This is the moment before the resurrection when everything is dark and unknown and, if you don't rush it, sacred.
Ghost Pipe doesn't photosynthesize. She makes no food from light. She draws everything she needs from the hidden fungal network beneath the forest floor — the dark, underground conversation between roots and mycelium that most people never see and never think to look for. She is pale as an old spine lying on the forest floor. She droops her sweet flower head like she's listening for….
something….
I think of this plant, well… not quite plant, not quite mushroom, perhaps a spirit only here for a moment- when I think about the eldest daughter who learned to live without being truly nourished. Who learned that she could have the scraps. Who learned even that would be weaponized eventually. Who became an expert at drawing on her own reserves which even they were scant at best, of being capable and present and fine that she forgot she was allowed to need the network. She never even learned that nourishment was supposed to move toward her as much as it moves away, reciprocated properly.
Ghost Pipe is a plant that knows pain. She's been used for centuries for the kind of pain that overwhelms the nervous system — physical, emotional, psychic. The pain that is too large to feel all at once. The kind you've been carrying so long you've stopped calling it pain and started calling it personality. She doesn't take the pain away. She sits with you inside it. She makes it bearable to finally feel what you've been outrunning. There's a woman I keep thinking about when I work with this plant. She's competent. She's perceptive. She's everyone's first call in a crisis. And she is so far from her own body she wouldn't know her own hunger if it spoke her name.
Ghostpipe is for her.
Not to fix her. Not to rush her toward the light.
A protective and ethereal forest spirit accompanies her as she moves through the fertile dark where the real nourishment has been waiting all along. Where the nutrients she gathers are of her own becoming. Where she finds the ANCIENT botanical architecture that can hold the line as she releases the tension held at the gates of her throat, her ribs and her womb…
If this spirit plant calls to you, I recommend working with her has a Flower Remedy. Taking 3 drops, 3 times per day for 90 days and watch your entire world change.
